After the recent school shutdowns that led to digital learning, it became clear that many students were not well-prepared to make the abrupt transition to education online. Can we blame them? It was like nothing fifth graders have ever been asked to do before. Even though students are very used to technology and can figure out tablets and apps very easily, they lack digital literacy. Copying, pasting, researching, using google docs, and other platforms were very difficult for them. In this ever-changing world and a rapid shift to a society that is leaning on working from a screen, my students would benefit from Chromebooks in the classroom. In today's uncertain times, access to Chromebooks in the classroom for my students is increasingly important. As a teacher, I am being challenged to provide collaboration and engaging activities while still practicing social distancing. This kind of technology will help students collaborate using google docs/slides and engaged with FlipGrid and other platforms. My goal is to create prepared learners who can tackle digital learning again with more ease should we go through another crisis and school closures. With this preparation, students will be ready to take on the world in the 21st Century with their acquired skills.
