My school is blessed to be 82% minority. My class has a wide range of students of various backgrounds and religions who make my class a vibrant learning environment. It is critical that my students have an opportunity to read and listen to books with characters that look like them and may be faced with some of the same struggles that they are faced with at their age. Everyone should be able to say they're a hero in a story. My students love reading when they have books they are excited about. Books with characters that look like my students often are books they gravitate to and become immersed in. Many times, these books are the ones that generate the best conversations between reading partners, book clubs, and whole group discussions. Having books with diverse characters will spark excitement and help promote the love of reading with my students.
