Book clubs encourage community. Students begin to see reading as a social experience rather than an individual activity. They are able to learn from others and hear different perspectives about a shared text. Fiction texts are often used in elementary classrooms for book clubs, but there is definitely a place for nonfiction book clubs as well. Students need to see that nonfiction texts can spark powerful discussions, just like fiction texts. Book clubs can also encourage reluctant nonfiction readers to find a topic or structure that works well for them. They may completely change their opinion of nonfiction based on a book club experience. My students need the opportunity to build upon each other's background knowledge, make connections, and share their opinions with a common text. Nonfiction book clubs would deepen comprehension and help my students widen their world view. They would be able to study a wide variety of topics and expand their vocabulary through collaboration.
