Students are starting a sustainable bee keeping project to restore our local bees from the world-wide honey bee collapse. The students will monitor bees by utilizing the Beepod brand kits which are highly recommended for schools to complement their NGSS and STEM education lessons. Beepod kits invite a safe, effective way for students to be part of the global environmental movement to save bees, including online data to track their progress. The shape of the Beepod minimizes interactions between bees and beekeepers by being less intrusive and safe. Our students can save the bees and learn sustainable beekeeping! Likewise, they will get to see firsthand how bees work together, communicate, and pollination. I look forward to my students developing a connection to a their local ecosystem and the role that humans have played in the honey bee decimation. I envision my students sharing their passion with our community in regard to becoming a bee-friendly city, and ways they can help our local bee populations. They've already expressed a high interest in starting this project which can filter through to all of the students in our k-12 school district.
