The students at my school have been identified as having either severe emotional behavior disorders or autism spectrum disorder. The materials will make a difference by allowing me to provide percussion intervention. Percussion intervention has shown to significantly improve attention to task in children with autism and increase their overall level of engagement with caregivers. Group music has shown to provide students with social challenges an alternative way to communicate and be in community with others without the worry of being "good at music". Drumming provides the natural ability of rhythm to calm the human mind and body. Through the conscious use of tempo, instrument choice, and timbre, percussion intervention has proven to help students release excess energy and become calmer - naturally. Percussion intervention will provide a tremendous benefit to the students served at my school.
