Flexible seating is valuable because it allows students to choose a space to work based on the way that they like to learn best. During independent and group work times, students will choose a location in the classroom that works for them. My plan is to have several seating options available. Making sure students are comfortable will ultimately increase their engagement. When students are engaged, naturally, more learning will take place. Having a choice in their learning builds confidence and classroom community. My hope is that students will be able to choose which seating option they like best and move to a space in the classroom for the independent portion of our workshop lessons to be able to use it. Students will be able to choose between their traditional student desk, the donut ball, one of the floor seats, the stability cushions or using the clipboards to stretch out on one of the three carpets that we have in our classroom. By providing student with this choice, they are more likely to be comfortably engaged and it also gives them more accountability for their learning.
