Every class begins with 15 minutes of reading. The students choose their own books and have no requirements except to read. They don't answer questions or complete projects (that comes in other parts of class). Through this, I have had students who haven't read a book in years enthusiastically devour pages. They just need the opportunity to find the right books and the freedom to enjoy them. By funding this project, you will fund imagination, empathy, creativity, and literacy. My goal is to create a lifelong habit of reading that transcends occupation, wages, or requirement. I want my students to see reading is its own reward. In order to do this, I need to constantly update and add to my classroom library. A nonreader is just someone who hasn't found the right book yet.
