Reading at even a slow pace exposes students to more sentences per minute than the average movie or TV show. Vocabulary grows and existing vocabulary is reinforced by seeing it used in context. Novels in the target language such as La Casa en Mango Street help heritage speakers improve their skills to true fluency. ALL students learn to appreciate the written word in another language. This not only helps them gain insight into their native language but gives them a completely different lens on the world. Foreign language learning is a Future Ready skill!
