Sparking and kindling students' love for reading starts with engagement. Students today are too often categorized as non-readers, especially in a classroom setting. By creating more choices in the types of texts to read, students will be more inclined to critically engage with the classroom texts, take ownership in their learning, and become life long readers. This project will offer more genre options, including graphic novels and poetry, for students' understanding of literacy in this expansive media world while also giving them perspectives that will guide their growth in becoming an active citizen as they interact with English 10 curriculum.
