Flexible Seating in the classroom is a great way to allow students independence and gives them the opportunity to take control of their learning. In my classroom, students are encouraged to become leaders in their learning and begin to understand that they can decide where in the classroom they are most successful. They realize their strengths and make decisions to help them grow. Currently, my students use flexible seating or "smart seats" to complete independent work activities during literacy, math, Social Studies and Science. Students have different options including table desks to stretch their legs, big pillows and clipboards to work on the floor around the room, and a standing desk for those that need some movement while working. In my 10 years in education, I've noticed my students are more engaged in their work when they are working in their "smart seat" that they choose then just sitting at their desk. Students all work differently and have different needs that need to be met-an appropriate work space is an important one! The items I have selected would be an amazing addition to our classroom and give my students more choices when choosing smart seats to complete their work! It is crucial that students are comfortable when working and sitting in a bean bag chair, bouncing on a yoga ball or working on floor chairs will allow them to focus, move around and ultimately be a tool of success to assist their learning style. My students love working on our class carpet with a clipboard and a new area rug would help make that happen. Giving students the option to choose their own working spot is really empowering and is helping create 21st century learners!
