Programming and coding are becoming standards for junior high and high school students. Block coding helps elementary students write code, but leaves out physical manipulation. LEGO has figured out how to allow kids to code and program concretely to students through their play, allowing them to actually see that changing their code changes the outcome on their train set. Working with loops, switches, and coding becomes as natural as exploring their favorite building blocks, helping build an essential foundation for my youngest students. Using play to teach coding concepts allows for students to learn programming as second nature instead of it being a foreign concept when they are older. Building a train set and physically adding switches, altering the color coding, and watching the train loop around and around will help build concrete connections for future coding and computer science classes.
