With all of the craziness happening in the world right now and the first day of school being pushed into Septemeber, I believe that this year we need to focus on not only academics but also our students’ mental health. They need an area with resources where they can go when they begin to feel big emotions. They will be able to calm their bodies by using sensory play and by reading social stories that will help them work through these emotions. I welcome you to envision Mrs. Couch's Calm Down Corner where my students can use different resources to help them work through their big emotions. If they begin to feel anxious or worried and they need something to calm their mind they can play with the kinetic sand or water beads. When they’re angry and need to take their frustration out they can grab a fidget or a stress ball to relax. If they have too much energy and need something to help them focus they could use one of the stability balls to get them back on track. If these sensory resources are not enough and they still are having a hard time they could read one of the social stories which will help them reflect on their emotions and how to overcome them. With your help, my Calm Down Corner will ensure a better start to an already crazy school year. I hope I was able to illustrate to you how important these resources will be in my classroom.
