First grade is a year of academic and emotional growth. First grade is also a year where students learn the foundational skills in math and reading. Students take on new skills and in future grades build upon this foundation and apply their knowledge to more challenging and complex tasks. The same can be said for science. Students at my school are a part of a computer coding immersion magnet school. However, coding at the first grade level is not only putting combinations of coding boxes together. In first grade, we focus on the processes behind getting from one point to another. Coding is all about process. The products I have selected will help scholars understand the foundation for how coding works. Through hands-on experiences, I hope to engage my students in hands-on meaningful activities where students can utilize these skills to become the problem solvers of tomorrow.
