I am a a third grade teacher in a K-6 public elementary school in West Virginia. These students are primarily from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and unfortunately, we have not met AYP for the last 2 years. Basically, the children are sweet and eager to learn, but many of them lack real-life experiences to bring into the classroom and their learning. For example, on a recent field trip to a science center, many of the children thought that we had arrived at our destination when we stopped at a rest area. Therefore, it is my responsibility and personal challenge to help them understand their place in the world. My students seem to learn best through hands-on experiences in a small group setting, so I use games, centers, and technology to try to give them exposure to the world around them. It is a third grade CSO to learn the states, capitals, regions and landforms of the United States and these materials would greatly support these learning objectives.
