Students learn problem solving and teamwork through real experiences. As students work together to create, they need to navigate social skills. Research shows that when students learn through play they are more likely to retain knowledge and acquire skills more quickly. By donating to this project you will be helping 65 kindergartners learn science, math, creativity, and problem-solving through play. Success and failure in play teach students that it is okay to try in all areas of their learning even if they do not succeed on the first try! Although this project does not address a specific learning target or standard I believe it addresses the foundations of kindergarten- working together, discovering the world through play and creativity. The students in our kindergarten classes need more time to explore and experiment in their environment in ways that challenge their thinking and is not direct instruction by a teacher. The light table, giant building set, and easy builders will be shared between three kindergarten classrooms. We will rotate the materials every 12 weeks. The light table will allow students to learn about shadows and light. They will learn about color blending and opacity. The easy builders will aid students in discovering architecture and design. They will discover how gravity and weight effect objects. The giant building set will introduce students to 3-D shapes, lines, and vertices in ways a whole group lesson never could.
