My students need to use hands on math manipulatives to help them gain a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. My students can learn mathematical algorithms and use them successfully, but struggle with understanding why mathematical concepts work. Manipulatives are important tools for helping students think and reason in more meaningful ways. The effective use of manipulatives can help students connect ideas and integrate their knowledge. My fourth grade students have usually struggled with understanding decimal values. I plan on using base ten blocks to help my students gain a deeper understanding of decimals and their relationships to fraction and whole numbers. Base ten blocks will help struggling students grasp the concept of decimal relationships and will help on-level and advanced students deepen their understanding and develop flexibility in their mathematical thinking. Working with concrete materials provides students the opportunity to experience a concept in a new way. Being asked to use the Base Ten Blocks requires students to reason in ways different than paper and pencil algorithms.
