I work with students who need hands-on materials to practice with before moving on to more abstract computations in their heads. Using manipulatives like fraction tiles and board magnets allow us to make BIG ideas into manageable and fun activities. Students who begin with manipulatives will comprehend and retain information far better than just attacking a complex math idea with abstract computations. My students have special learning needs that makes using hands-on materials important to their learning. These kinds of materials can be on the expensive side, especially with 12-15 students in my pull outs at a time! I work hard every day to make sure these students are getting exactly what they need, especially when it goes further than what the general education setting can provide. Please help my students to be able to work with math topics in a hands-on way to better understand the material in their math classes and conquer their math goals!
