Education has changed tremendously since I was a child. There was a time when it was easy to fly under the radar, never having to answer questions or participate too often. The result of not engaging was . . . not learning. Today, there is an emphasis on classroom engagement where teachers teach in a way that all students have the chance to participate often. Teachers work hard to increase their students’ “opportunities to respond” and classroom engagement. Keeping students engaged leads to a more healthier lifestyle as adults. One of the best ways to ensure that all students are engaged in their learning is by using special tools like whiteboards. If every student has a whiteboard, markers and erasers, every student can actively participate! For example, as a kindergarten teacher, I can ask my students to write down different ways to make the number 5. The point is, every child has the chance to try. I can quickly assess each of my students' skills and respond accordingly with the these whiteboards. I am also asking for number 1-120 chart and magentic ten frames to help my students have visuals of how to write, model and understand number sense. The glue sticks will be used for creating math art projects to display what they know about numbers. A wonderful outcome of these supples often is that students learn there is no opting out! All students work all the time! It keeps them active, engaged, and learning throughout the day. Our goal in education is to maximize learning, and whiteboards are effective tools that help us reach that goal.
