Since we are a large school with a very diverse population, we need books in our library that are reflective of that. High quality, diverse literature will get students excited about reading by providing windows into the lives of others. By providing diverse and meaningful books for our school more students will find the beauty and power in reading and in themselves. Books like I Am Enough teach students about loving who you are, respecting others, and being kind to one another When students are able to make a connection with characters they read about, they are more motivated and better able to understand the text. Showing students characters that look, speak, and act like themselves or people they love is such an integral part of hooking them as readers. Additionally, exposing students to characters beyond those found in traditional literature helps them form a sense of understanding and tolerance towards others.
