Our Olympics are not just a field day for middle school age kids! We also strive for the Middle School Olympics to be a cultural event that allows the students to learn and experience different areas and cultures of our world. The event is not just for physical or athletic competition. It encompasses many different genres of interest including: Athletic (like 100 yard dash, 3-point shooting contest), Academic (brain bowl, spelling bee) and Fun (pie eating, shoe kick). There is something for everyone! We dedicate this time to respect diversity and to build a sense of community in our school. It has become a tradition within our school and community! The materials and equipment we are asking for will allow every student in the 6th through 8th grade to participate in the many Olympics events we have planned and will last for many years to come! There are 36 groups of students and each group represents a country. There are 12 countries per grade level. Each country is also part of a region that are composed of a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade country from the same geographical region. Having regions allows different grade levels to come together and get to know one another and work with others outside of their respective classes. Over the course of 2 months, the Olympics project promotes unity across the grade levels, helps the students understand the diversity of our school and to work within that diversity. The project culminates the last week of school with an indoor day and outdoor day of Olympic events.
