My kids have very little exposure to role-playing games (other than video game versions, and it's limited at that) or tabletop gaming culture at all; they are used to being anonymous behind a screen and lack interpersonal skills. Dungeons & Dragons widely incorporates the now heavily emphasized teaching focus on the 5 Cs of 21st Century Skills: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Character/Compassion. I plan on linking fantasy fiction, historical primary sources, informational text reading skills, reflections, critiques, and creative writing exercises with the D&D experience for a tabletop role-playing game club. This is a Dungeons and Dragons class but amended to fit what students are actively learning about in their tier 1 middle school classes. There will be game elements and topics that support ELA, Math, Science & Social Studies, Art, and Theater Standards. The adventures we would explore would include physical geography, weather systems, biology, economics, civics...anything is possible. I will let students bring in ideas for us to incorporate. The ELA elements are inherent; storytelling, drama, character traits\design, and math as well (dice math, character sheet stats, etc). As well as social/philosophical elements that I've included in my TTRPs in the past.
