The book will be used as a mentor text as students explore historic disenfranchisement throughout America, and learn about their local history. I want to provide books for my students that reflect who they are and their daily experiences. Ensuring that each student has a book in their hand also supports quality instruction. Renee Watson is a Portland native who writes about our community. My class studies international issues through the lens of local history. By using a novel by a local author and woman of color, my class will have access to materials that broaden their understanding of historic disenfranchisement in our community and communities around the country.
