Hands-on math materials will give students extra needed support in learning new math concepts. My students work hard to understand math, but in a second language, it can be a real challenge. They are only in their second year of language learning in Mandarin, so their vocabulary is still somewhat limited. When they can see different strategies and also hear those strategies described in Chinese, they are better able to grasp new concepts. Real, hands-on items give them a chance to try various strategies and find out what really works. Having a variety of materials helps keep their interest as well.
