My students are extremely perceptive in the visual realm. I would like to focus on reading skills within visual texts. The Pride of Baghdad is a fictional account based on a 2003 bombing of a zoo in Baghdad during the Iraq war. This graphic novel will accompany a graphic novel I already teach, Maus I and Maus II, that addresses a Polish concentration camp during WWII. This work will help me teach graphic novels to not just Honors students, but other levels as well. Graphic novels are often misunderstood as an easy out to reading. In fact, it is the opposite. Graphic novels challenge students to read on two levels: both the written word and visual level. I am so excited to get to work on utilizing this resource for a cultural unit based in the graphic novel genre. Thank you!
