Being that my students are high school level ELL kids who are not efficient in speaking the English language, they rely greatly on any and all outside resources to help them be successful within the school setting. I have very limited access to laptops for my students to use, and when they are available, the majority of them take the entire class period to load because of how old they are. I try my hardest to help students finish any projects or assignments they have, but a class period is never long enough to get everything completed. I have found with English language learners, if the feel like they are not going to be successful at something, they will shutdown immediately. For example, if I am helping one student with a project and there are others who need help with something else but don't have a laptop to use as a resource, they will sit the rest of the class period and not want to do anything because they feel they can't correctly complete the assignment on their own without any form of help. Providing my students with laptops would not only increase success within the classroom, it would also lead to growth of self-esteem. Self-esteem would be increased because students are able to complete work on their own without excess help. I provide my students with assistance any way I can, but because many do not speak fluent English, using the translator on the laptop, in many cases, seems to be more beneficial to students than for them to sit down and work with me. My heart goes out to these kids and I want to do whatever I can to help them become the successful adults they so much desire to be.
