As readers, my students cover a wide range, from those who love reading to those who don’t like it at all. Research shows one strategy that benefits all readers, despite their reading profile: free independent reading. In his book "The Power of Reading," author Stephen Krashen reports that numerous “...studies show that more reading results in better comprehension, writing style, vocabulary, spelling, and grammatical development.” He argues that free independent reading, where students get to choose their books, “is one of the more powerful tools we have in language education….” For these reasons, independent free reading has become an essential component of my classroom activities, and my classroom library has become central to that practice. For some time, I have been working to create an inviting reading environment where students have many choices; my classroom library provides students with well-organized books within arms’ reach and comfortable seating. Both my students and I are happy with this progress; however, a recent inventory of our books has revealed a deep shortage of nonfiction selections. Nonfiction is an especially important genre for students to explore since it builds background knowledge, a proven factor in student achievement. In addition, a student who reads nonfiction effectively will be better prepared to take on adult responsibilities. For these reasons, I am asking for help in building this section of my classroom library with texts that cover a wide range of interests, reading levels, and sub-genres within the nonfiction realm. Books like "Into the West," which chronicles our westward expansion, and "Be A Changemaker," a manual on how to make a difference in the world, will round out our class library nicely, and I would appreciate any help you can give us.
