My school has a large collection of older novels, one of which is Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. While that is an excellent novel and a classic, I have found that my children cannot connect much to the story due to the time period. Ghost Boys is also about the racial tension between races in the United States and depicts real-life situations involving young African American teens. In my experience, teens are willing and eager to learn...if the material can catch their attention. Ghost Boys will do just that. I will be able to pull in excerpts from Roll of Thunder to expose them to classic literature and make connections from the past to the present.
