Preschoolers are active and busy. Providing ways to encourage gross motor movement helps them focus on other tasks and activities during the day. But more importantly, it also promotes language use in many ways. As we move along the balance beam, we learn about distance words such as "close, far, near, away from." Stepping on stones we talk about prepositions such as "in front, in back, next." Walking through the rope ladder rungs we can talk about the word "between." Using traffic cones we again are going "between" or "around." And using steps, we are discussing "up and down." All of these are very important language concepts that children use in math and literacy every day.
