When discussing science, many students will admit that the subject doesn't strike excitement or joy for them. There almost seems to be an expectation of dislike. I want to change this. I want students to be excited about science. I want them to be able to make the connections, emotional and physical, to their everyday lives. I want to use Braiding Sweetgrass to do this. As a science teacher, I'm often told to use the teachings of Western Science to provide knowledge for students. This does nothing to support the romantic side of science. Braiding Sweetgrass looks at the connections between life, science, and traditional ecological knowledge. I hope to encourage students to make personal connections with the environment and its workings. Braiding Sweetgrass will be my summer assignment for AP Biology students. They will read and discuss via online forums, the importance of indigenous wisdom, linking concepts, and creating that spark and passion for science.
