Giving children the opportunity of choice empowers them. We, as teachers, must instill trust in order to truly meet their needs. A simple choice of a seat can change the dynamics of a classroom learning environment. We are allowing children to be themselves, maybe a stander, a floor dweller or possibly a bouncer to get rid of that extra energy all while they are actively engaged in their own learning. To encourage students to be themselves, we must first give them the tools to try. I want to create independent thinkers, boundary pushers, collaborative learners and I feel flexible seating allows for that. A simple act of choice can empower a child to try when they may have not.
