Too often middle school art curriculum is limited to painting, drawing and ceramic because the materials are less expensive. Middle school students want to explore and have experiences that are new and "not normal". Many 7th students would see a glass fusing art project as something that is only possible in high school or at a professional level. When students are presented with an opportunity that they thought was not accessible to them, they will engage and explore in a way you have never seen. With a glass project of this caliber, my students will be shown that anything is possible no matter what your age. Using professional grade glass materials to create a functional piece of jewelry art is something many college students are not given the chance to do. My students crave projects that are higher level that don't fit the typical k-8 art project mould. Giving them this opportunity will feed their need to create and show them they are capable of creating like professional artists!
