The students are from an urban area in southern CA. This is low socioeconomic predominantly Hispanic community with a large percentage of English language learners. For years these students have been working hard to overcome their socioeconomic situation and high dropout rates. I am proud to say that due to the students' hard work, their API scores have risen to the 700s. This rise in scores has been attributed by students to the smaller class sizes and increased number of available hands-on activities. Unfortunately due to the poverty level of this community, the school district can only afford to maintain small class sizes. Very few of the students have families that can afford to donate supplies or money to help the classroom. All hands-on activity materials must therefore be supplied by the teacher which is a financial strain. The students deserve these materials so they may have an equal chance of attending and graduating college as those students from more affluent areas
