I can't sit in a regular chair for any length of time - my desk chair is an exercise ball and my students ALWAYS want to borrow it (I've gone through three in the last year alone). For students who haven't developed a positive relationship with school, a classroom can feel like a prison with rigid rows of desks rather than a gateway, and I strive to create a classroom environment that changes that experience. High school students are still young at heart - and in body - so sitting in a regular classroom chair can feel like torture to those who need to be moving in order to keep their minds engaged. In his middle school classroom, my husband has found huge success with these balance stools for those who can't sit still; they give students mobility without affecting those around them. My high school students often clamor to sit on the floor, and I reserve it as a privilege for on-task behavior. Beanbags would make this feel like the reward it is intended as. Two of each of these will help me get a sense of how well they work in my special learning environment and offer my students alternatives to the classroom experiences they've had in the past.
