When my students are present, both physically and mentally, they are ready and more willing to learn. This is important to all students, especially those that have emotional and/or behavioral disabilities. When a student is anxious or unable to concentrate, they are not ready to learn. My goal is to continually create a soothing classroom environment, where everyone feels comfortable and inspired. Anxious or overly-stressed students can take a minute to sit in front of the aquarium and watch the fish to relax and reset so they are more ready to learn. There are always baby fish to watch grow; the kids love to be involved in taking care of them and tracking their progress. Our school is close to Lake Michigan; the aquarium is a great way to help them to understand the aquatic ecosystems, as well as develop strategies to cope with life's challenges.
