The library is a gathering point for all classes and students. Many times we have a plethora of students or multiple classes searching for books and/or information. Our ABLE (Academic and Behavior Learning Environment) students are no different. We encourage their participation in general environment activities, but sometimes that is a bit more than they can handle. The disruption to their schedule, the extra movement in the library or the change in environment can set some of these beautiful students off into a meltdown or severe episode. All of this is okay and is accepted by all on campus, staff and students. However, why not make it easier for our kiddos with autism to better handle their anxiety or express themselves with greater accuracy while building deeper relationships with other students? By donating the requested items, our students with autism will be able to appropriately interact with our neuro-typical population while expressing their emotions or finding comfort in large, soft, safe tactiles. After checking in and out books, many of our students engage in casual conversation and interaction (yes, talking is allowed in our library) such that relationships based on common grounds are forged. This may not be the best means for creating connections for those with autism. Having an activity such as the Build Me Emotions that allows for those with autism to express themselves, will help our other students to grasp the emotions that they are going through. The LEGO Soft Brick Set will provide tactile interaction between those with and those without autism; thus, creating a bond while helping with anxiety and frustration. Inviting those with autism into a neuro-typical world is easy; keeping them there without pain is difficult. Help us keep our wonderful students with autism involved and included.
