The study of When the Emperor Was Divine will provide our 8th-grade students a deeper understanding of some of the events of World War II, and specifically the challenges posed by the Japanese internment camps on U.S. soil. This is meaningful in helping students understand the tragedy and trauma of war and the resilience of human beings as they face unimaginable and unfair difficulties. The message that we grow stronger as we overcome adversity and grapple with injustice is something we all need to remember, and this story teaches readers just that. Our hope as 8th grade ELA teachers is to increase our students' empathy for others and heighten their sensitivity to injustice.
