The board games I have selected will help students in many ways. For example, Pandemic and Forbidden Island require cooperation in order to win. Those games were picked to help students compromise. Space Base and Stone Age were picked because students must determine which resources they would need in order to advance their communities. These games increase critical thinking abilities through managing resources and determining how to use workers effectively. The more well known board games I chose, Stratego and Risk, were to interest the students who would be more willing to play the familiar games before learning new ones. Playing board games teaches students how to interact appropriately with others in a non threatening setting. This club is open to all ages so older children need to learn how to be patient with younger ones, and younger students need to learn how to let others play at their own pace. On top of the increase in critical thinking abilities and social/gaming etiquette, there are many teachable moments in all games. Some examples are teaching continents with risk, or teaching countries and capitols with Pandemic. One overlooked aspect of playing board games is the amount of vocabulary that is introduced through the rules or cards associated with game play. Clank is a good example of increased vocabulary because it is a fantasy game.
