I have been working with a group of fourth grade girls on learning more about gender equity. We have examined literature, articles and observed our own environment to become more aware of the impact gender equity has on female students. During the course of our exploration of the topic, we found research that indicated that at around age six, girls start to view boys as smarter than them. We decided to tackle this shift in students' thinking with read aloud books featuring strong, independent female characters. The three fourth grade female students will be going into three grade one classrooms to share the read aloud books and facilitate discussions on gender equity. The books we have requested will help move the thinking of all of the grade one students. As the girl leaders read, they will stop to pose questions and share their thinking. All of the read aloud books will be mapped out by the girl leaders during my weekly time with them. All read aloud books will be left in the grade one classrooms to allow the students to independently explore them further.
