This DonorsChoose project will support my Advanced Painting and Printmaking class. This is an upper-level class where students get to deepen their expressive skills and develop concepts and aesthetic decision making. This class, prior to the pandemic, would begin by learning the fundamentals of color through an in-depth color theory lesson that results in a photo-realistic painting. This experience must be hands-on for true learning to take place.
My students do not have the financial ability to purchase these supplies, and my school does not have the resources to supply them. Students have little to no paint at home; some have none. We have been using cereal boxes as canvases. My class has always been the escape for these young artists. Many of these students will go to art school and will need to have a portfolio ready to even apply. If a scholarship isn't in their future, neither is college. My class is not only where they can be themselves and express their inner thoughts but where they create their portfolios for college applications! They are literally painting for their futures.
