Two nights, in the wilderness of canyon country, sleeping next to a peaceful river. Exploring the canyons, while seeing bighorn sheep, mule deer, lizards, river otters, dinosaur footprints. Learning about riparian ecosystems and sedimentary geology in the places where it's happening. This is the experience I want to give my students. Middle school students don't care about anything, unless they have experienced it first-hand. Living in western Colorado, we have a sincere connection to the rivers. Taking students on a rafting trip will increase their connection to the river and show them why it is important to conserve. They will have a better grasp of the water usage of the area and the ecosystems that are impacted by it. Through this trip, I will not only give my students a fantastic experiential learning experience, I will turn them into river conservationists.
