I have chosen Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, in graphic novel format. The students in my classes may never have had the opportunity to experience the works of Shakespeare because of their inability to access the language. We will be reading the text together. These books will also be used during independent reading time. Use of graphic novels helps lower level learners and English language learners with reading comprehension and vocabulary acquisition which is exactly what these students need! With these graphic novels, my students will be able to enter into conversations about English and Shakespeare alongside their peers. If the barrier of language is removed, then they can engage with the material and themes and start to make those big world connections that are so valuable to their development.
