Dungeons & Dragons widely incorporates the now heavily emphasized teaching focus on the 5 Cs of 21st Century Skills: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Character/Compassion. I plan on linking Fantasy Fiction, Medieval primary sources, informational text reading skills, reflections, critiques, and creative writing exercises with the D&D experience in my three English 2 classes (10th grade). Students will be encouraged to take on the reigns of Dungeon Mastering themselves by the end of this semester (school year ends May 23). By the end of April I hope to have 5 groups running independently in each of my English classes). I also would like my students, who will likely not get an opportunity like this to come their way again, to experience D&D with as much authenticity as possible. The dice sets bring accountability to student rolls (since everyone can see their rolls) and an aesthetic appreciation of the game, right along with having playing mats available so students can easily track combat situations and really use their 21st-century skills to make a plan of attack. I recognize that miniatures would be quite costly, so the Pathfinder Pawns are a great, cheaper substitute to make the game both visually appealing and running as smooth as possible in the short, 50-minute class sessions that we have available to us (more like 40 minutes at best after attendance, moving desks, getting supplies, and then cleaning up at the end of class). So, any items that can save us time (Dungeon Master's screens, multiple copies of the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide, etc.) are EXTREMELY helpful in making the game enjoyable and efficient.
