When I started teaching I inherited a collection of random books that was supposed to be a classroom library. They were old, falling apart, and didn't look at all appealing to my students. They were definitely not high-interest and they were far from the correct Lexile levels. My mission has been to rebuild my classroom library with intentionally chosen books that will make my students want to read. I cleared out the undesirables and made room for some new titles.
Reading hasn't been important (or fun) to most of my students, and I want to give them every opportunity to change that. I'm hoping the titles I have selected will make them give reading a chance and that they will then want to read more (that's why many of my selections come from book series). I want them to see how life can change when your literacy skills improve. In addition to providing new and exciting books, I want to get to the point where I can host book clubs - small groups of students would read the same title and meet with me to discuss different aspects of the book. This will certainly boost their confidence as readers!
