As a teacher, I feel that it's my job to make sure that each and every one of my students feels that they are seen, heard, and valued. A way that I can do that is by making sure that my students are able to see themselves in the books that we read. While 50% of children's books feature a main character that is White, less than 10% (each) of children's' books have main characters that are Black, Latinx, Asian, or Native American. Each of the students in my class deserves to see themselves in the books that we read. Students not only need to see themselves, but they also need to see other cultures, communities, and races represented in books. It is my job as their teacher to make sure that they are. This project will allow me to do just that. By adding more diverse books to our classroom library, I will be able to give some students the ability to see themselves, while others are able to learn about different races and cultures.
