When students are able to work with materials to build models their able to take ownership of their learning. With the NGSS students are required to question and explore driving questions about science and math. As they answer the questions they are exploring they need models to help them discover answers to the questions. When teaching STEM and STEAM subjects students have to build and investigate questions about science and mathematics. Some students are very curious about chemicals from the periodic table of elements. Once the questions have been developed by scaffolding the students need hands-on materials to build models or do activities. When I ask them to bring in recycling materials it is difficult. Many of the students who I teach have parents who are single parents or who work multiple jobs and struggle with finances so being able to provide the students with supplies to write about the questioning strategies is important. We will be discussing how our land mark "Bele Island will change over the next 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 up to a 1,000,000 years from now?" The students will have to write their questions and do research on how Land Formations Change over time. Many of the students don't have journals to record their questions and create drawing of Models that help support the evidence they collect for their research. Those of you that have funding to help my students with the materials that will help them have a beautiful classroom environment and enough materials to research and journal about the evidence that they discover on-line or in books will be very beneficial for my inner city students. Thank you in advance. S. Adams 4th grade Math/Sci teacher
