In my classroom Spheros will be used to enhance student learning and develop their critical and higher order thinking skills. It is amazingly versatile and will engage and empower talented and gifted students across all elementary grade levels and curriculum areas. Students will be designing and creating code to direct the Sphero while connecting, communicating, collaborating, problem solving, testing, failing, and iterating – all key characteristics of 21st century learners. For one project, students will design a mini golf course using the Tickle app. They will direct the Sphero to each hole in as few code directions as possible. At the end, they will analyze the data from the game and calculate the mean, median and mode for each hole of the course. In another project, students will design and create a plastic cup character that can be placed over the Sphero. They will create a story line and move their cup character to retell the story. Students will have the opportunity to sharpen their higher order thinking skills by coding with the Spheros and engaging in the academic curriculum.
