All of the books that I am requesting honor my students' heritage and allow them to read in their native language. The "Conoce a..." book series are biographies of famous Hispanic authors, artists, and explorers. I've also included contemporary idols like Ellen Ochoa and Sonia Sotomayor. When studying the genre of biographies, it is important that students have access to books in Spanish that describe people that look like them. Other stories will be used to teach units on culture (like being proud of having many names) and advocacy (such as the books about strikes and immigration). María: una niña latina en Estados Unidos, Paco: un niño latino en Estados Unidos, Mamá, ¿por qué nadie es como nosotros?, Lola, and Mis 130 apellidos speak to the experience of being a latino child in America. Cesar Chavez: La lucha por lo justo, El lobo hace huelga, Ella persistió, and Alma y la isla will help me teach tough advocacy topics focused on empowerment and fighting for what is right.
