Academic success is a social justice issue.
Research has shown that a consistent predictor of academic success is reading for pleasure outside of school, I am asking for high-interest books for my students to take home to read and then bring back to school. Multiple studies conclude that when children choose what they read and read independently at home, they score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, they have higher reading comprehension, vocabulary growth, spelling facility and greater knowledge of the world than those who do not.
I want to provide my reluctant readers with books that excite them and they are able to read without help.
In my classroom, we need multiple copies of books for "book clubs." My students choose from these and form book clubs where the members are reading the same book at home. They bring discussion questions to school and eat lunch in book clubs, discussing what they have read. I am asking for two copies of each book so they can be used for book clubs.
