Most of the children in my class come from families that can not afford extras things. I would like to take them on a field trip at no cost to their families. They all have special needs and a hands-on experience like this is such a wonderful way for them to learn. I want to give my students something they may never experience as children. My students often come to school hungry, not bathed, wear clothing that are too small, tell stories of how they sleep on the floor or share a bed with siblings. They carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. This experience may allow them to forget the sadness they have each day and bring them some joy. My school year ends with a science unit called animals in different regions. I would love to take them to the zoo so they can have a hands on experience so they can see and learn about these animals.
