Obesity continues to be an increasing problem in our state. The Tribe’s Harvest Garden will equip my students with the knowledge of growing healthy local food options. Growing a variety of vegetables will increase the student’s willingness to try and consume freshly grown produce. Since our class is a hands-on food-based class the students will grow, harvest, and cook their bounty. The students will have the ability to plan and create meals at home. The activities related to the garden will be a perfect fit for the culinary curriculum.
The participating students will gain a lifelong skill, which they can relay to their families. The majority of my students come from low income families. Their families often times are unfamiliarly with the growing process and lack the confidence needed to start their own garden. The Tribe’s Harvest Garden will introduce students to hydroponic gardening, composting, and planting. The students want to make a change in the perception of our state.
Tribe’s Harvest Garden will be raised beds because of the lack of drainage in our courtyard. The garden will be the student’s responsibility. Plants will be chosen according to growing season and class polling. The garden will increase physical activity, social skills, and school engagement.
